TITLE: School Counselor

QUALIFICATIONS: Valid PEL (Public Educator License) with a School Counselor endorsement.

JOB SUMMARY: To provide supportive services to students, families and staff personnel.

REPORTS TO: Principal(s), Assistant Superintendent of Special Education and Special Services, and other district administrators.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary based on Chicago Heights School District 170 and American Federation of Teachers, AFT Local 604, Chicago Heights Council contractual agreement.

PENSION SYSTEM: TRS

Responsibilities
  • Direct services to students and parents:
    • observe students in school settings as appropriate
    • provide diagnostic information on students and/or student’s family which will assist in educational planning and placements
    • provide social developmental study, in a case study when appropriate
    • attend and/or coordinate IEP staffing for students
    • assist in identification of needs, recommendations and implementation of services for students
    • provide individual, group or facilitative counseling for students
    • provide parental education and counseling as appropriate in relations to child’s needs
    • serve as ongoing student liaison between home, school, and community agencies.
    • assist with developing Functional Behavior Analysis and Behavior Intervention Plans.
    • assist with developing IEP Transition Plans
  • Consultation Services:
    • serve as resource person to teachers, principals, and support staff on behalf of students
    • facilitate the effective use of community resources and services to meet need of students and/or students family
    • identify gaps in existing services and assist in developing the new services which may be needed
    • provide inservice training experience
  • Role of Counselor:
    • to conduct individual and group counseling for K-8 students.
    • Work in concert with the teachers of the self-contained K-6 classes regarding:
      • student management
      • development of home-school management programs
      • sharing relevant family information
    • share responsibility with school nurse regarding home follow-up for students with excessive absenteeism or for emergency purposes
    • secure case history information for preschool screenings and initial case study referrals
    • responsible for summarizing case history information in narrative form
    • attend IEP staffing where applicable
    • responsible for IEP students receiving counseling
    • act as liaison person with community agencies, DCFS, private clinics, hospitals, etc.
    • assist with crisis intervention as needed.
